Winter Finally Arrives in Houston: A Reflection and Look Ahead 🌱
Jan 05, 2025
Hey there, fellow Houston gardeners! Can you believe we're finally pulling out our winter coats? After what feels like the longest (& craziest) summer in memory, the cold front has finally arrived in our sunny corner of Texas. Let me tell you, 2024 has been nothing short of magical in my garden! 🌿
## The Year My Garden Plants Just Wouldn't Quit 🌺
I've been gardening in Houston for 15 years now, but 2024 was one to remember! Both spring & fall tomatoes went crazy. All my kitchen counters are covered with them now ! All my basils grew taller than my kiddos, and those curry leaf plants? They're living their best life like they're back in Southeast Asia! Even my neighbors stopped by regularly to marvel at the banana plants that just kept on growing well over 15 Ft . Figs & Mulberries were abundant. Roses stole the show & my Winter melons produced their most. Even my pomegranate ( which hasn’t fruited ever before) fruited this year. All my citrus has buds/baby fruits right now.
Winter Warriors: Sweet Treats After the Frost ❄️
Now that the temperature has finally dropped, our winter vegetables are about to show us what they're made of! Let me tell you something amazing about these cold-hardy champions - they actually get sweeter after a light frost! That's right, the upcoming cold snap isn't something to worry about - it's nature's way of helping our brassicas turn their starches into sugar. My collards, kale, and carrots are practically doing a happy dance in anticipation!
Just yesterday, I tucked in some:
- Mustard greens that'll get extra zippy after the frost
- Collards that'll sweeten up beautifully in the cold
- Sugar snap peas reaching for the sky
- Broccoli and cauliflower soaking up the cool weather
The cold weather ahead is exactly what these vegetables have been waiting for. There's nothing quite like harvesting frost-kissed vegetables for your winter table!
Looking Ahead: Spring 2025 Garden Dreams 🌸
Y'all, I can hardly contain my excitement about planning for spring 2025! My dining room table is covered in seed catalogs & seeds and I've got garden plans scribbled on every spare piece of paper. I'm already dreaming about new varieties to try and plotting out succession plantings. After the amazing growing season we just had, I'm more inspired than ever to make next year's garden even more abundant. The possibilities are endless, and I can't wait to share this journey with all of you!
